TMJ/ Migraine Prevention/ Sleep apnea

TMJ stands for: Temporomandibular joint.

Night-time teeth grinding and clenching puts pressure on the nerve, which runs through the area of the temporomandibular joint between your jaw and skull. This pressure from clenching is far more damaging than pressure from chewing, so if you clench hard while grinding your teeth, or even if you clench without grinding, many of the above symptoms can result, including most prevalently jaw pain & jaw joint problems, tooth pain, neck and upper back pain, headaches, and migraines.

There are many options to treat this problem:

  • Conventional Night guard: A night guard is a horseshoe shaped plastic device that we will fabricate for our patients that is frequently worn
  • NTI: a. NTI- Tension Suppression System is the most effective FDA-approved method of migraine prevention. The NTI- is at night or whenever the patient suspects that they need it. a small custom fit device worn when you sleep. This special night guard is fitted to your upper front teeth and provides a flat surface for your lower front teeth to rest on, which helps relax your jaw muscles. The NTI is also effective in treating nightly tooth grinding, Temporomandibular joint Disorder (TMJ Disorder or TMD), and chronic headaches. If you are a headache or migraine sufferer or a nightly tooth grinder, call our office.
  • Snore guards: a. A restful sleep is so important in being able to function on a daily basis. If you snore or have sleep apnea, this may be the solution.

The EMAŽ (Elastic Mandibular Advancement) oral appliance is a customized removable appliance created for the noninvasive treatment of snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). The appliance is designed to both advance the lower jaw and open the bite to allow for less restricted airflow during sleep. EMA devices help promote a deeper, more restful sleep by preventing snoring and relieving the symptoms of OSA. The EMA does not interfere with breathing through the mouth, even in cases of congested nasal passages. For many patients it can be an alternative to the CPAP machine.
